Today’s Monday Muse is French model and actress, Caroline de Maigret. You’ll probably have heard of, or read, her slightly tongue in cheek look at ‘How to be Parisian‘. And I love her thoughts on the “virtue of the signature item”, something that pulls an outfit together or makes you feel strong, “a gift a woman gives herself”. With my first pay check I bought an iPod, not quite a style statement, a few years later I invested in a leather jacket, but it could be a designer handbag or a diamond necklace, I like the idea of having that item that says I bought this for myself, I’m independent and I don’t need someone else to buy me the things I want.
She effortlessly combines masculine tailoring and a laid back tom boy style with feminine lace blouses or edgy leather skirts. By layering block textures with bright colours, or wardrobe staples and the odd statement item of clothing, she creates a simple sexy style. Topped off with her trademark French tousled hair, I totally believe she just got up and threw on anything to look amazing.
Starting with the blazers, masculine tailoring in bright colours paired with simple jeans, or layered under an oversize coat. The classic leather jacket, whether for the laid back smart look, rock chick or to get a bit of edge to a floaty, feminine dress. The must have wardrobe staples: denim, plaid and white shirts as well as, really beautiful feminine blouses layered with baggy jeans and a boyish blazer. And, as you’ll see below statement pussybow or wet look leather.
Leather skirts or unusual dresses, but still with block colours and textures, that still implies a laid back tomboy style. The oversized coat, and like the blazers they come in bright colour to make a statement, or hanging off the shoulder in that cool Parisian way. Trainers feature a lot, I don’t know how she makes hi-tops look sexy, but she does. You’ll also often seen her brogues, gorgeous ankle boots or stilettos.
